Privacy policy

1. Who we are

GardenMaths ("we", "us"), a project of DueRiva, publishes free garden calculators and guides at gardenmaths.com for readers in Australia and New Zealand. Contact: hello@gardenmaths.com. We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (including the Australian Privacy Principles) and the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, and, for visitors from the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, the GDPR and UK GDPR.

2. What we do not collect

• There are no accounts, logins or sign-up forms.
• The dimensions, layers, prices and project names you type into the calculators are processed by JavaScript in your browser. Ordinary edits do not submit those values to a project database.
• New Share links put the encoded project after the # in the URL. This part is not included in the normal HTTP request to our host. The project is encoded, not encrypted: anyone with the link can open and read it, so do not put private information in a project name.
• Older Share links put the project in a ?p= query parameter. Opening an old link sends that URL, including the parameter, to Cloudflare. We continue to open these links and move the project into the # section in your browser; this cannot undo the initial request. Hosting services may process request URLs in their logs.
• We do not maintain a database of saved projects. The page's JavaScript reads a shared project from the link. A URL fragment does not prevent JavaScript running on the page from reading it.
• We do not collect names, email addresses or payment details through the site. If you email us, we use your address only to reply.

3. Data stored on your device

The site stores your chosen light or dark theme and, if you change it below, your calculator measurement preference in local storage. These preferences are not cookies or visitor identifiers. You can clear them through your browser settings.

4. Server logs

GardenMaths is served by Cloudflare. Cloudflare processes standard request data (IP address, browser type, request URL, time) to deliver the pages and to protect the site from abuse. Request URLs can include query parameters in older Share links, as explained above. We redact query strings from new Worker log and trace URLs; this does not remove historical logs or prevent Cloudflare from processing the initial request for hosting and security. This data is handled under Cloudflare's privacy policy and is not used by us to identify individual visitors. Our referrer policy sends only the site's origin, rather than a project-bearing URL, in subsequent Referer headers.

Cloudflare's bot protection may set a cf_clearance security cookie to record the result of a browser security check. It is separate from the cookieless analytics described below. See Cloudflare's JavaScript detection documentation.

5. Advertising

Google AdSense and affiliate links are not currently active. If we introduce advertising, we will update this policy and implement the applicable consent controls before serving it. When Google ads are active, Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve and measure ads and to prevent fraud. The following controls would then apply:

• You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
• You can opt out of many third-party vendors' cookies at aboutads.info or, in Europe, youronlinechoices.eu.
• Google's own description of how it uses data from sites that use its services is at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
• If Google ads are introduced, visitors from the EEA, UK and Switzerland will receive the required consent controls, with a way to change their choice.

Any advertising or affiliate relationship will be clearly labelled and will not change calculator results or the assumptions explained in the guides.

6. Analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and to measure how fast pages load, so we can see which pages are used and whether the calculators work on different devices. It sets no cookies, stores nothing in your browser's local storage and does not fingerprint visitors by IP address or browser details (Cloudflare's description). We only see aggregate figures such as page views, referring sites, countries and device types; nothing we see identifies you.

For the trailer, sleeper bed and potting mix calculators and the project budget page, we also send small requests to GardenMaths to count page loads, valid calculations after an interaction, completed trailer quote comparisons, successful result copies and next-step clicks. On the project budget page, a valid calculation means at least one complete supplier quote, a completed comparison means the page compared complete quotes, and a result copy means a CSV download or print request. Loading speed is recorded only in broad ranges. Each action is counted at most once per page load; these are counts of page loads and actions, not unique people or sales.

We store only daily totals grouped by calculator, action, Australia/New Zealand/other country, mobile/desktop viewport and speed range in Cloudflare D1. We do not include entered measurements, quantities, prices, supplier or item names, project names, copied text, sharing URLs, referrers, IP addresses or visitor identifiers in these counters. Standard hosting request processing still applies as described above. To stop one network from flooding these counters, Cloudflare's rate limiter counts each network's requests for 60 seconds using its IP address (for IPv6, the first half of the address). The address is used only for that count: it is not stored with the totals or written to our logs. A daily cap also limits how many events are counted in total. Known automated checks are excluded; labelled production tests are kept separately. Totals older than 90 days are removed when a new event is stored.

These calculator counters respect Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. You can also disable them for this browser below. This control applies to calculator counters; Cloudflare Web Analytics can be blocked using browser settings or content blockers.

Enable JavaScript to view or change your calculator measurement preference. Browser Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control are also respected.

7. Fonts and libraries

Web fonts and the 3D viewer library are served directly by GardenMaths. The 3D preview runs in your browser; your project dimensions, prices and sharing data stay there during rendering. Font licence copies: Bricolage Grotesque, Figtree and IBM Plex Mono.

The site is intended for adults planning garden projects and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

10. Overseas disclosure

The advertising, analytics, hosting and CDN providers named above may process data on servers outside Australia and New Zealand, including in the United States. Each is bound by its own privacy policy and, where applicable, by standard contractual safeguards.

11. Your rights

Because we hold essentially no personal information about visitors, there is normally nothing to access or correct. If you have emailed us, you may ask us to delete that correspondence. Australian residents may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au) and New Zealand residents to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner (privacy.org.nz) if they believe we have not handled their information properly; we would ask you to contact us first so we can resolve it.

12. Changes

If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with an updated date. Material changes – for example adding a new category of data collection – will be noted at the top of the page for at least 30 days.
